What have you gained from this experience? How have you grown?
From my internship experience with Focus on Youth, I have learned the value of truly connecting and working together with the local community. The nonprofit attracts an array of volunteers and supporters all throughout Portland. Additionally, I’ve acquired greater technical skills concerning the process of grant writing, recruitment of volunteers, management of fundraising efforts, and the creation of numerical objectives.
I’ve grown throughout this internship by recognizing the importance of effectively communicating and aligning with team members for immense aims, such as ending widespread food insecurity, to come to fruition. The work I’ve been able to do with the nonprofit has allowed me to appreciate the importance of doing good, fulfilling work while serving others.

It’s phenomenal that you learned so much this summer, especially about working with others to accomplish big goals. Community-oriented work requires a group with a unified mission, and being able to inspire others with your vision is no small feat. I’d love to hear more about how you were able to do that!
